Nairobi Goan Gymkhana: Debbie and Paolo

At the end of the reception, after all the speeches and before the dancing, Paolos grandmother, aunts and uncles gathered at the front of the hall and sang the Becau. A goan tradition, it is a blessing sung to the newlyweds by the older members of the family. Thinking back on the day that had been, I couldn’t think of a more fitting end to such a wonderful day.

They met on Debbie’s first day at the University of British Columbia. Paolo was in his second year and they were placed on the same floor in residence.  She says it was Paolo’s perfect smile and intriguing accent that drew her in.

This is Debbie and Paolo’s wedding, one perfect August afternoon.

Early in their planning, Debbie and Paolo decided to keep things simple and meaningful. An old family, the Lobos have deep roots in the Kenyan Goan community. As Paolo’s parents and grandparents all had their wedding receptions at the gymkhana, it seemed fitting to continue in the family tradition.

The biggest challenge was planning their wedding from Canada. Thank goodness they had such a supportive network who took care of every detail. The couple would like to take this opportunity to thank Sheila and Fred, Paolo’s parents, for making their dream wedding come true. ‘It was the most incredible day and we are so grateful for everything they did to make it happen. There are so many others who made our day perfect – too many to name names. Just know that we could not have done it without you and are so thankful.’

The highlight of their day? ‘That is a hard question – it was literally perfect. For both of us, the moment we saw each other as I started walking down the aisle was so incredibly special. More emotional than we could have imagined. I suppose that’s the moment it all became real.’

Debbie and Paolo, thank you for having us. It truly was the most beautiful day.

  1. I feel spoiled rotten by this wonderful photos-album. Some pictures are so moving, some others quite funny and most of them expressing joy. I wish I had been there.

I wish the newly weds the very best in their life and a happy togetherness for as long as they shall live.

Thank you so much for sending me this precious gift.

    With all my love,

    Tante Louise from Saint-Lambert, Quebec

Having just arrived in Kenya from my tour of the Celtic Isles, I thought the craic couldn’t get any better. What a weeding, what a day and Mombasa was so special with everyone relaxed, well at least Sheila was. Thank you so much for inviting us to your wonderful week of happiness
