Years ago I almost photographed Amie and Christian’s wedding in Watamu, but it didn’t work out. Over the years we kept in touch and was so moved when Amie shared that they’d had a little girl. We are close to each other in age and as an older mum who struggled with miscarriages and fertility issues, I celebrated right along with her when their daughter was born.
When I went home to Kenya for a visit a few years ago, we met in person and I had the opportunity to photograph a Sunday afternoon at home with them.
Amie, you know how we Kenyans like to say ‘umejizaa?’ (you’ve birthed yourself). Your daughter is so much like you; clever, funny, friendly, curious, confident and strong-willed. You are doing an amazing job.
I HUMBLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE WURUNDJERI PEOPLE OF THE KULIN NATION AS THE TRADITIONAL OWNERS AND CUSTODIANS OF THE LAND ON WHICH i LIVE AND WORK. I PAY RESPECT TO THEIR ELDERS, PAST AND PRESENT.
